Over the years there have been a number of movies based on games. Some of these movies are funny, some are suspenseful, and others are just scary. Whatever your preference there is a board game (or video game) movie for you.
Jumangi The Game
Jumangi is an easy family game suitable for children. This cooperative game requires all players to work together during this jungle adventure to avoid the danger and escape before it is too late.
Jumangi The Movies
There are two editions of the Jumangi movies – 1995 and 2017.
The first movie was released in 1995 based off of the book “Jumangi” with a rating of PG. The star character Alan Parrish, played by Robin Williams, is trapped in the game for years. Alan is later rescued by other players who also got trapped in the game. Eventually the four players play the interactive game for a win to reverse the long standing curse.
The 2017 PG-13 movie is Jumangi: Welcome to the Jungle. This newer iteration of Jumangi has a similar premise with 4 teenagers getting stuck in a video game. This movie has some gender bending and role identity crisis which brings the humor. Overall it is a fun movie with excellent cast including Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Kevin, Hart, Nick Jonas, and Jack Black.
Clue The Game
Clue, or Cluedo, is a classic family game that accommodates three to six players who are trying to solve the murder mystery. Each player takes turns moving throughout the board, secretly learning clues as to who committed the crime.
In order to win Clue you need to be the first player to identify the killer, the weapon, and the room that it happened in. However, if you guess prematurely and are wrong, your game is over.
Clue The Movie
This movie stars a large ensemble cast and is set in the 50’s at a large mansion. Clue is a 1985 comedy rated PG.
Some movies stand the test of time and can be watched years later and remain as entertaining as the first release. Unfortunately, Clue the movie isn’t as “classic” as its board game’s name sake. The plot is predictable and thin.
The one unique feature of this movie is that it has three different endings – similar to the board game when multiple wrong guesses have been made.
Currently there are rumors of another Clue movie being developed, but as for now these are just rumors and we cannot confirm any of these claims.
Battleship The Game
Battleship board game is a two person game in which each player is trying to destroy each other’s navy. The first player to sink the opponent’s five different ships wins.
Each player places their five ships (Destroyer, Submarine, Cruise, Battleship, and Carrier) strategically on the board in a way to keep them safe. Then players take alternate turns calling out coordinates in an attempt to get a “hit”.
Battleship is a fun game, especially with younger kids. The objective is clear, but there is truly very little strategy. It is more a game of luck.
Battleship The Movie
Although the game is suited for children, the movie is not. This PG-13 film contains violence and foul language.
Battleship the movie was released in 2012 and star Peter Berg, Liam Neeson, Brooklyn Decker, and Rhianna. However, this isn’t an ordinary naval battle.
This science fiction thriller plots our favorite crew against a fleet of naval ships from outer space seeking to destroy Earth.
Monopoly The Game
Monopoly is the oldest of strategy board games. The goal is simple, become the greatest property developer in the United States and bankrupt all of your opposing developers.
All you need to do is buy the properties, acquire monopoly(s), add houses and hotels, and wait for the money to roll in.
There is some luck in Monopoly, but there is strategy too. Our article 9 Strategy Tips for How to Win Monopoly makes the strategy clear.
Many of the modern day strategy games are 2nd and 3rd generation games which are spawned from Monopoly. However, the more popular games of today do not require complete annihilation of your peers.
Monopoly The Movie
Currently there is no Monopoly movie, but according to Deadline, Kevin Hart is in communication with both Hasbro and Lionsgate to star in a future movie based on the popular board game.
TRON Video Game
TRON is a video arcade game that was released in 1982. It has since been re-released with an XBOX version. The game requires players to maneuver through 12 different levels, firing at targets, and collecting points without losing their lives.
TRON’s original popularity was during the glory days of video arcade games in the early 80’s and also won the “Coin Operated Game of the Year.”
TRON The Movies
There have been two movies associated with this game: TRON and TRON: Legacy.
Interesting the first TRON movie was released in 1982, the same year that the game was released. The basic premise has to do with good versus evil which plays out in a computer program. One hacker battles another in a computer world in an effort to prevent the theft of his intellectual property.
TRON: Legacy was released in 2010 and is the science fiction sequel to TRON. In the Legacy movie the next generation gets trapped inside the video game grid and is forced to battle his way out.
Both TRON and TRON: Legacy are rated PG.
Interestingly TRON the video game and the TRON movies are inextricably tied together. The movies were designed and released at times which helped to promote the games popularity. The first movie to promote the coin operated arcade game and the second movie to promote the console version.
Double Dragon The Video Game
Double Dragon is a cooperative martial arts video game. Two players work together to fight their enemies and work through the virtual world.
This was my favorite game to play with my best friend when we would go to the mall. In retrospect, the game did promote violence, and I do remember having an enhanced belief in my own personal fighting ability for a short while after I played this game. Thankfully we didn’t pursue any real fights though – we probably would have got hurt.
Double Dragon The Movie
This is a 1994 action movie starring Mark Dacascos, Scott Wolf, and Alyssa Milano.
Double Dragon is rated PG-13 due to the fighting violence which is similar to the video game.
The movie is about two brothers who have to fight their way through Los Angeles after it has been ravished by an earthquake and lawlessness pursues.
Tomb Raider The Video Game
The game is based on the explorations of the game’s heroin – Lara Croft. Playing the game requires navigating through the tombs and other terrain fight for Lara’s life, avoiding hidden traps, and looking for clues to solve puzzles and other dilemmas.
The original Tomb Raider was released in 1996 and has had 16 subsequent editions, and spin-offs, over the past 22 years. Some of these editions were created to meet the needs of newly developed game systems. Other sequel games bring depth to the game and take Lara Croft on new and different adventures.
Tomb Raider The Movies
In 2018 Alicia Vikander reprises the role of Lara Croft in “Tomb Raider.”
All three movies are action adventure films. The first two Lara is in search of an ancient artifact. The third movie she is looking for answers surround the mystery of her father’s disappearance.
Parents should be aware that all three movies are rated PG-13, based in part on the sex appeal of the main character. Violence and profanity are also present in all three films.
Angry Birds The Video Game
Angry Birds is a game that requires shooting different birds into pig pyramids. You would have to play the game to completely understand.
Essentially every bird has different abilities and the pig pyramids change with each advancing level. This requires the player to determine how to strategically use each bird to successfully complete the level.
Angry Birds was first released as an App in 2009 and, like Tomb Raider, it has had multiple editions and spin-offs to meet the demands of newly developing game systems and player demands.
The Angry Birds Movies
The movie personalizes the birds and tells their story in a way that matches the video game. The movie provides some back story as to why the birds cannot fly on their own as well as to why they are arch enemies with the pigs.
The 2016 Angry Birds movie was a surprise success and there is a 2019 sequel in the works.
Popular voice over actors that gave life to the birds also contributed to the success of this film. These notable actors include Jason Sudeikis, Maya Rudolph, Bill Hader, Peter Dinklage, Kate McKinnon, and Sean Penn.
Based On The Video Game – Pac-Man
Before there was Fortnite or Minecraft the video game king was Pac-Man. It is the most popular video game of all time.
Pac-Man’s basic game concept of clearing the board before getting killed by the ghosts made the game easy to understand and very addicting for players of all ages.
The game was so popular that even the ghosts were well-known and quickly referenced by their nicknames – Blinky, Pinky, Inky, and Clyde.
Pixels The Movie
Pixels is a 2015 action comedy from Adam Sandler’s company Happy Gilmore Productions. This film is rated PG-13.
The movie’s story has a plot twist which isn’t consistent with the original video games design. This creative change makes the movie fun and less predictable.
The main characters in Pixels are played by Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Michelle Monaghan, Peter Dinklage, Josh Gad, and of course Dan Patrick.
This movie is not associated with a particular game, but how can a movie with the title “Game Night” not be on our list.
Game Night is rated R and stars Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams. The film’s premise is based on a group of friends who get together for a game night that turns into a real life mystery to find one of their friends who was kidnapped.
